Purity
About
Purity, also known as Aether, is a bonus which generally adds to the effectiveness of an item. Purity has no effect on Inspirationals.
Purity vs Aether
Purity and Aether are generally used interchangeably to describe the bonus value Foods are multiplied by. In the past Aether applied only to the bonus value and Purity applied to the 4 elements listed on each Food:
- Mercury
- Sulphur
- Lead
Currently while these elements can still be seen they have no effect.
Food Purity
Food Purity is a bonus which multiplies the Gluttony and Heal values of your Food. The Purity of a Food is listed on all Foods and raw ingredients as a percent. At 100% Purity the values of the Food are twice as high as they would normally be.For this reason raising the Purity of your Foods is a powerful way of increasing the effectiveness of your Food whether that be to Heal more or to gain more points faster during a Gluttony Session.
Purity is NOT required on all ingredients of a recipe to get a Purity bonus on the resulting Food, ONLY the ingredients which match the Food Group that Food belongs to. For example Papricharred Charcuterie belongs to the Slugs Bugs and Kritters Food Group so only the Any Bugs used in the recipe will affect the finial Purity. The Purity of the Raw Venison Steak this recipe required will not affect the finial Purity whatsoever. However, if the recipe was Simple Sunday Steak, part of the Game Meat Food Group, the Purity of the Raw Venison Steak would matter. For this reason it is sometimes worthwhile to save your Pure raw ingredients for the appropriate recipes. If the Purity of the raw ingredients matching the Food Group are different the finial Purity will be averaged. Purity multiplier is automatically applied to your Foods and is visible when looking at a Food's stats.

Sources of Purity
Brazier Purity
When Collecting Charcoal from a Coal Clamp there is a chance to receive an Unscathed Wood instead with a Purity equal to the average of all the Woodblocks used in the Coal Clamp's construction. Woodblock Purity is influenced by Gardening Purity. The Purity of a Baby Brazier and Blazing Brazier always starts a Purity of 0%, but each time an Unscathed Wood is added with a Purity higher than your Brazier, that Brazier gains 10% of the difference. An Unscathed Wood can be added even if the Brazier is full. The Purer your Brazier is the higher the chance of your Brazier dealing Critical Damage. While clicking on a Torchpost shows its Purity, there is currently no way to raise this.
Bug Purity
Any Bugs can have their Purity altered by selecting the Bug and right-clicking it on Any Plant. The Bug will then consume the plant and take on that plant's Purity. This is a direct transfer of Purity, meaning feeding Any Bug a Plant can cause its Purity to increase OR a decrease, so be careful.
Bush Purity
The Purity of Bushes and their products are determined by the Purity of the Gardening Pot it was grown in. When Destroyed the resulting Woodblocks will retain this Purity.
Farming Purity
The Purity of crops Harvested from a Tilled Field is based on a combination of the Purity of the Tilled Field, the Purity of the Seeds used when Planting, and chance, which may increase or decrease the Purity of a Harvest by a few percent. Each time the Harvest is higher than the Tilled Field's Purity that Field's Purity will permanently increase by up to 1%.
Fish Purity
Any Fish caught will take their Purity directly from the Bait used to catch it. A Fish Hook takes on the Purity of the Bar of Any Metal used in its construction. This Purity is passed onto Any Lure which is made from it. A Common Earthworm receives its Purity from Worm Purity and a Grub's purity comes from Bug Purity.
Fruit Purity
Each Everbloom that a Fruit Tree ripes with a Bee Skep in range, will cause your Fruit Tree to gain 10% of the difference between the Fruit Tree's Purity and the Purity of Bee Skep that pollinates it, multiplied by the percent fill of your 60,000 Worker Bees. For instance, if your Fruit Tree is at 0% Purity and your Bee Skep at 90% filled with 30k Worker Bees your Fruit Tree will gain 4.5% (90% x 50% (60k/30k). The Purity of a Bee Skep is equal to the average Purity of the Hay used in it's
Gardening Purity
Three factors influence Gardening Purity. The Purity of the Humus, the Purity of the Plant, and the Purity of the Gardening Pot. The Harvested Plant will be the average Purity of these three factors weighted towards the Humus. The formula is: Resulting Plant = ((Humus*2)+Pot+Initial Plant)/4. Any time the Resulting Plant's Purity is higher than the Gardening Pot's, the Gardening Pot's Purity will permanently increase by up to 2.56%. You may check your Gardening Pot's Purity by right-clicking it.
Hay Purity
The Purity of Hay is determined by either the average of all Autumn Grass used when crafting the Hay recipe, or the average of all the contents of a Hay Stack. Pure Hay is used to make Bee Skeps which in turn influences the Purity of Any Fruit.
Iron Purity
The Purity of a Bar of Pig Iron comes from the Iron Ore Boulder the Iron Ore used to make it, was Chipped from. Iron Ore Boulders' get their Purity from a combination of Mine Level, distance from the ramp, and chance. Iron Purity will transfer directly onto Fish Hooks, Knife Blades, or any Wrought Iron Bars made from it.
Meat and Knife Purity
A Knife will take on the Purity of the Bar of Pig Iron used to make its Knife Blade. The Purity of your Knife will transfer directly onto the Meat you receive when Butchering a Creature while your Knife is equipped.
Shellfish Trap Purity
A Shellfish Trap takes its Purity from the Fibre Netting used in its construction. Fibre Netting can be made from any Fibre, but the only Purity Fibres available are Cotton and Milkweed Jute which affected by Farming Purity and Gardening Purity respectively. A Shellfish Trap's Purity transfers directly onto Any Shellfish caught in it.
Tree Purity
The Purity of Trees and their products are determined by the Purity of the Gardening Pot it was grown in. When chopped down, Woodblocks will retain this Purity, however Woodblocks and products from Destroying the resulting Tree Stump will not have any Purity.
Turkey Purity
Turkey Purity is based on a combination of the average Purity of all Turkeys inside it and the Purity of the Turkey Coop itself, and chance. Each time a Turkey Egg is lain with a higher Purity than the Turkey Coop, the Purity of the entire Turkey Coop will increase by up to .10%. A Turkey will have the Purity of the Turkey Egg it was hatched from. That Purity will be passed onto the products which come from that Turkey. Wild-caught Turkeys will always have a Purity of 0% which will generally negatively affect the average Purity of the Turkey's inside a Turkey Coop.
Weapon Purity
Craftable metal Weapons such as Halberds and Spanish Sabres initially take their Purity from the Wrought Iron Bars used in their construction but the Purity of all Polearms and Sword can be modified by selecting a Whetstone and right-clicking it on the Weapon and selecting "Sharpen". This will consume the Whetstone and transfer its Purity onto the Weapon. Purity increases the amount of damage done by the Weapon by up to 10% at 100% Purity.
Whetstone Purity
The Purity of a Whetstone comes from the Boulder it was Chipped from. Only Boulders from within a Mine Entrance have Purity, which is from a combination of Mine Level, distance from the ramp, and chance. A Whetstone can be used to Sharpen Weapons such as Halberds and Spanish Sabres to increase their damage.
Worm and Humus Purity
Common Earthworms and Earthworm Pythons can have their Purity raised by allowing them to eat Any Plant with a higher Purity than their own. To do this place a Worm in a Container and place your pure Any Plants directly next to, above, or below the Worm. After a few hours the Worm will eat one of the Plants and take 10% of the difference between the Plant's Purity and the Worm's Purity. Additionally Common Earthworms found when Rummaging an Abandoned Bird's Nest will take on the Purity of the Tree it came from. Worms in turn pass their Purity to the Humus they produce in a Compost Bin based on the average Purity of ALL the Worms inside the Compost Bin and its Worm Efficiency. For this reason it is recommended you regularly check on your Compost Bin and remove any unwanted Worms that spawn as they will lower your average Purity. Humus is one of three components for Gardening Purity.
Wrought Iron Purity
The Purity of a Wrought Iron Bar comes from the Bar of Pig Iron it was made from and will pass its Purity onto Weapons such as Halberds and Spanish Sabres made from it.
