You need to build a Mine Entrance before you can enter a mine.
Allows you to get Ore Boulders and Rubble Boulders from walls in a mine.
There are 3 kinds of walls/tiles in mines:

*Simple light grey wall which can be simply mined with a pickaxe. Yields one Rubble Boulder;

*Dark walls which need a Pile of Wood to be placed beside it and burnt for about 2 hours. When the time has passed all the surrounding walls/tiles can be mined. Yields one rubble boulder;

*Different ore tiles. There are tiles for Copper, Iron and Silver. They don't need any preparation and can be mined right away. The yield is one ore boulder.

Once you finish mining a cracked wall tile, your character will hold a large boulder which you can drop somewhere and then chip ore or rubble from it; alternatively the player can dump the boulder into a Stamp Mill for automated processing (you won't get Whetstones or Sterling Geodes this way).

The purity of a ore is based on the level you are on and the distance from the ladder.

The Purity of the Ore Boulder transfers directly to the Bar of Pig Iron produced in the smelter. If you wear clothing with a bonus to the Mining Artifice, you can get better chances for higher purity ore.

+
Mining a Softened Hard Rubble Wall has a chance to cause a Mine-Down, with this chance being increased the older that Mine level is. A Mine-Down will instantly create a new Mine Entrance leading down another level, and clear away a 13x13 hexagonal space around your Mine Entrance. For this reason it is advised to Mine nearby Ore Walls before Mining nearby Hard Rubble Walls. Triggering a Mine-down may cause you to take a large amount of damage to one, or more of your Humours, however if you are Knocked Out from this damage you will not loss any Proficiencies, but you WILL drop your Inventory. This damage can be lowered slightly by increasing your Mines & Mountains Proficiency. Additionally a Mine-Down may cause you to drop to the next Mine level as well. The new Mine level will likely initially contain a large number of Bats which will eventually despawn if you wait long enough.

When you mine you run the risk of triggering an impending cave-in, illustrated by dust falling from the mine ceiling. You can prevent the cave-in by building a Mine Support under it. You have in the ballpark of five to ten minutes to build a support before a cave in occurs.

Each time a Wall tile is Mined there is a chance to trigger a Cave-In. A Cave-In will scatter new Rubble Walls randomly in areas that you have already Mined out around the source of the Cave-In. Being under a Cave-In when it falls will instantly cause you to become Knocked Out and will damage nearby Structures. The chance of a Cave-In happening is based off the wall's proximity to other Un-Mined Walls, its proximity to already existing Support Beam and your Mines & Mountains Proficiency. While very rare it is technically still possible to get a Cave-In while mining under the radius of a Support Beam. An impending Cave-In will be evident by a rumbling sound and dust falling from the ceiling and can be stopped by building a Support Beam directly under the exact spot where the dust is falling.

Mine Levels
There are 8 safe mine levels available for mining after creating a mine. The 9th level is known as the Dreamworld, it connects all other mines that have reached the 9th level and can be very dangerous to access. Caution is advised and one should think carefully before digging into the Dreamworld. Mining in level 8 might randomly result in a cave-down to level 9 (without mining black tiles).

In order to go down a level you must first find a dark tile. Dark tiles are randomly generated in the mine level so it is advised to use mining methods similar to MineCraft to find dark tile veins. Once a vein has been located you must prepare each tile by creating a pile of wood and lighting it on fire. Once the fire has burnt out, any wall that was directly touching the tile the fire was built on will become a standard, mine-able wall. You must then attempt to mine each tile in order to trigger a cave down. It is a random chance whether or not a tile will cause a cave down.

Once a cave down occurs your character will fall down to the next level and take significant blood damage. If you are KO'd due to this, you will not loose proficiencies, but you will drop your inventory. Be aware that the new level can contain bats which can be very dangerous in swarms or to new characters with low biles.

Mining a cave down will cause a mine entrance to appear and create a 13x13 hexagonal space around it. So before mining any dark tiles, it is advised to mine any surrounding ore.

"Now when a miner discovers a vena profunda he begins sinking a shaft and above it sets up a windlass, and builds a shed over the shaft to prevent the rain from falling in, lest the men who turn the windlass be numbed by the cold or troubled by the rain."

– Georgius Agricola, de Re Metallica

In order for ores to be smelted into metal, they must first be extracted from within the womb of the earth. Mining allows you to construct Mine Supports and to mine from softened rock and ore surfaces within the mine. Soften darker rock surfaces by lighting a fire by them and letting it burn.

Mine-Downs

WARNING! Triggering a Mine-down may cause a huge amount of Humour Damage.

Mining a Softened Hard Rubble Wall has a chance to cause a Mine-Down, with this chance being increased the older that Mine level is. A Mine-Down will instantly create a new Mine Entrance icon.png Mine Entrance leading down another level, and clear away a 13x13 hexagonal space around your Mine Entrance. This damage can be lowered slightly by increasing your Mines & Mountains icon.png Mines & Mountains Proficiency. Additionally a Mine-Down may cause you to drop to the next Mine level as well. The new Mine level will likely initially contain a large number of Bat icon.png Bats which will eventually despawn if you wait long enough.

Mine-Down.

Mine Levels

A Mine can be up to 8 levels deep, with each level requiring more Phlegm to Mine on. The first & level are considered safe however Mining anywhere, NOT just Hard Rubble Walls, on Level 8 might randomly result in a Mine-Down to the 9th level, which is known as Unknown Item icon.png Dreamworld. The exact nature of Dreamworld is shrouded in mystery, but what is know is that Dreamworld connects all other Mines that have reached this 9th level. Caution is advised and one should think carefully before Mining down to Dreamworld.

Iron Purity

The Purity of a Bar of Pig Iron icon.png Bar of Pig Iron comes from the Iron Ore Boulder icon.png Iron Ore Boulder the Iron Ore icon.png Iron Ore used to make it, was Chipped from. Iron Ore Boulders' get their Purity from a combination of Mine Level, distance from the ramp, and chance. Iron Purity will transfer directly onto Fish Hook icon.png Fish Hooks, Knife Blade icon.png Knife Blades, or any Wrought Iron Bar icon.png Wrought Iron Bars made from it.

Cave-Ins

Each time a Wall tile is Mine icon.png Mined there is a chance to trigger a Cave-In. A Cave-In will scatter new Rubble Walls randomly in areas that you have already Mined out around the source of the Cave-In. Being under a Cave-In when it falls will instantly cause you to become Knocked Out and will damage nearby Structures. The chance of a Cave-In happening is based off the wall's proximity to other Un-Mined Walls, its proximity to already existing Support Beam and your Mines & Mountains icon.png Mines & Mountains Proficiency. While very rare it is technically still possible to get a Cave-In while mining under the radius of a Support Beam. An impending Cave-In will be evident by a rumbling sound and dust falling from the ceiling and can be stopped by building a Support Beam directly under the exact spot where the dust is falling.

Bats

A Bat icon.png Bat is an aggressive Creature which live inside of Mine Entrance icon.png Mine Entrances and appear by chance when Mining walls, when a Cave-In is imminent, or on the next level after a Mine-Down. The chance of Bats appearing is greater with higher levels of Madness. A Bat, when attacking will fly in close and, if not killed, will attach itself to your Neck detaching anything in that slot and sucking your Blood. To remove a Bat, open your Equipment Window and click the Bat in your Neck slot. This will cause Bat will fly a bit away from you and then turn around to attack you again. Abilities like Stomp icon.png Stomp will work well on Bats, even though they are flying.
