Be careful however as taking the wrong medicine will lower the chance of the right medicine curing the disease! Keep in mind though that it can take more than one dose to actually cure a disease even if no incorrect medicine have been taken beforehand. Once the disease bar is full, you will be dealt permanent humour damage and once a humour reaches 0, you permanently die.

Once a {{i|Disease}} is [[Disease#Signs and Symptoms|Diagnosed]], it can be treated with the appropriate medication. WARNING! Pilgrims who are at MAX Disease will begin taking Blood damage, if this causes you to become Knocked Out you will Permanently Die!

Human Infectious Diseases

Diseases

There are four main Disease icon.png Diseases in the New World, Big Pox icon.png Big Pox, Frontier Flux icon.png Frontier Flux, Land Legs icon.png Land Legs, Maroon Fever icon.png Maroon Fever. Untreated Disease will progressively get worse, filling up your Disease bar, until at max Disease you will begin taking .1 Blood damage roughly every 90 seconds. If your Blood gets to 0 and you are Knocked Out, you will permanently die.

Pilgrims are NOT allowed to enter the Providence Church if they are infected.

Transmission

Humans are believed to acquire Disease by inhalation of bad air. Standing close to another infected pilgrim, or even next to the corpse of a pilgrim who has died of Disease, and opening an infected Plague Chest icon.png Plague Chest are believed to be ways to contract Disease. It is also rumored that the item Cozy Blanket icon.png Cozy Blanket, a gift from the Developers, can transmit Disease when opened.

Zoonotic Transmission

Some animals and insects can pass their Diseases on to humans. Zoonotic Diseases CANNOT be Prevented.

Rats

Rat icon.png Rats are an aggressive Darkness icon.png Darkness Creature which will frequently attack on sight. If a Rat attacks you other Rats nearby will join in and attack you as well. If you are bit by a Rat you will become Diseased, with the particular Disease being random. Each subsequent bite will increase the Disease's severity. Pilgrims who spread Disease to others gain a good bit of Insanity.

Deer Ticks

Deer Tick icon.png Deer Ticks are obtained by chance when skinning a Deer icon.png Deer. A Deer Tick can be used to transmit Disease to Criminals in the Stocks, or hidden in most Clothing by a pilgrim who has learned the Plague Handling Skill, wearing Any Clothing with a Deer Tick hidden inside will cause you to become Diseased.

Domesticated Animals

Diseased Cow icon.png Cows, Goat icon.png Goats, Sheep icon.png Sheeps, and Pig icon.png Pigs do NOT normally transmit Disease icon.png Disease to humans, however Domesticated Animals which die of Disease can be loaded into Long Range Mortar icon.png Long Range Mortars by pilgrims who have learned the Plague Handling Skill. Being hit by Diseased Animal fired from a Long Range Mortar will cause you to become Diseased.

Signs and Symptoms

With the four Diseases there are four symptoms, but all four diseases will exhibit all four symptoms randomly, but one symptom will be more common than the others. Early in the Disease's progression it may be difficult to tell which Disease has actually been contracted. As time passes, the Disease will become more and more serious, the symptoms occurring more frequently. The worse the Disease gets, though, the easier it is to figure out which symptom is the most common and therefore find the correct cure. [1] This video can help in identifying your symptoms.

Disease Imbalance Symptom Description
Big Pox icon.png Big Pox Yellow Bile Coughing Flinch and distinct coughing sound when symptom strikes.
Frontier Flux icon.png Frontier Flux Phlegm Vomiting Flinch, puking sound leaves Vomit icon.png Vomit on the ground when symptom strikes.
Land Legs icon.png Land Legs Black Bile Dizziness Flinch without making a sound when symptom strikes.
Maroon Fever icon.png Maroon Fever Blood Headache Flinch, hold head, and distinct moaning sound when symptom strikes.

While you are experiencing the symptoms of any Disease you will be Stunned icon.png Stunned for a time relative to the severity of your Disease.

Disease Treatment

Once a Disease icon.png Disease is Diagnosed, it can be treated with the appropriate medication. It may take more than one dose of the medication to cure the Disease, especially if the Disease has progressed particular far, or the wrong cure has been taken. CAUTION: Taking any cure will do .2 damage to the corresponding Humour. While small it is possible to become Knocked Out in this way.
