In-Game Text

"Among the substances that are dug up because they are useful, those known simply as coals are made of earth, and they are set on fire and burnt like charcoal. They are found in Liguria, where amber also occurs, and in Elis as one goes by the mountain road to Olympia; and they are actually used by workers in metals."

– Theophrastus of Eresos, On Stones

Coal is essential to the mining and metalworking efforts of a colony, and can also be used to fertilize fields. Coaling allows you to construct and light Coal Clamps, which burn blocks of wood into charcoal.

About

Charcoal icon.png Charcoal can be used as both a Fuel and a Fertilizer, as well as Ammo for Baby Brazier icon.png Baby Braziers and Blazing Brazier icon.png Blazing Braziers.

Making Charcoal

  1. With 20x Woodblock icon.png Woodblocks on hand Build a Coal Clamp icon.png Coal Clamp.
  2. With a source of Fire icon.png Fire on hand, light your Coal Clamp.
  3. Wait 56 hours for the wood to burn down. When the Coal Clamp is finished burning the graphic will change from smoking to black.
  4. Right-click on the Coal Clamp and select Gather Charcoal. The amount Charcoal is determined by the Purity of the Woodblocks used and your Sparks & Embers icon.png Sparks & Embers.

When Collecting Charcoal icon.png Charcoal there is a chance to receive an Unscathed Wood icon.png Unscathed Wood at the same Purity as the Woodblock icon.png Woodblocks used to make the Coal Clamp icon.png Coal Clamp instead. When used as Ammo, if the Purity of the Unscathed Wood is higher than the Blazing Brazier icon.png Blazing Brazier's, adding it will raise the Blazing Brazier's Purity, allowing it to do more damage to invaders.
