In-Game Text

"Every animal has enough brains to preserve their skin. Dead or alive."

- Old trapper wisdom

While the old folksy wisdom of the backwoods may not apply to Rumtifusels or Gumberoos, the saying nevertheless has a distinct essence of truth to it. By mixing the mashed brain substance of an animal with water a tanning fluid can be created which is rich in natural tannins and which more often than not should suffice to transform the skin of that same animal into the finest leather for use in bookbinding, clothes or other purposes. Beware, though that the dried hides must first be scraped with Water of Lime to remove hair, fat and flesh before the tanning can commence. Tanning allows you to scrape hides in preparation for tanning, prepare tanning fluid and construct tanning tubs.

About

Leather icon.png Leather can be sold in Providence to NPC Stalls for 12x Silver Pieces icon.png Silver Pieces.

How to Make Leather

  1. Place a Raw Hide on a Drying Frame icon.png Drying Frame. It'll become a Dried Hide icon.png Dried Hide after 8 hours. (Note: Dried Squirrel Pelt icon.png Dried Squirrel Pelts cannot be used to make Leather.)
  2. Select a Lime icon.png Lime from your inventory and right-click it onto a Vessel filled with Potable Water icon.png Potable Water to make Milk of Lime icon.png Milk of Lime.
  3. Craft a Limed Hide icon.png Limed Hide from the craft menu.
  4. Tanning Fluid icon.png Tanning Fluid can be made by selecting a Brain icon.png Brain from your inventory and right-clicking it onto a full Vessel of Potable Water icon.png Potable Water to produce a 10L Bucket of Tanning Fluid with 5% concentration, adding another Brain will make it a 10.0% solution. Alternatively, Tanning Fluid may also be created by Boiling Birch Bark icon.png Birch Bark. Place the Birch Bark icon.png Birch Bark in a Clay Pot icon.png Clay Pot or Copper Pot icon.png Copper Pot full of Potable Water on top of a lit Fireplace icon.png Fireplace.Boiling four pieces of Birch Bark in a full Clay Pot icon.png Clay Pot yields 3L of Tanning Fluid with 6% concentration. Boiling nine pieces of Birch Bark in a full Copper Pot icon.png Copper Pot yields 5.5L of Tanning Fluid with 7.5% concentration.
  5. Place up to four Limed Hide icon.png Limed Hides into a Tanning Tub icon.png Tanning Tub.
  6. Select a Vessel filled with Tanning Fluid icon.png Tanning Fluid from your inventory and right-click on the Tanning Tub icon.png Tanning Tub. Make sure to add at least 10L of Tanning Fluid icon.png Tanning Fluid per Limed Hide icon.png Limed Hide.
  7. Wait.
  8. Each time a Limed Hide icon.png Limed Hide reaches 100% it consumes 10L of Tanning Fluid icon.png Tanning Fluid and it is converted into Leather icon.png Leather and very rarely Fine Leather icon.png Fine Leather. There's a chance of the Limed Hide icon.png Limed Hide becoming a Foetid Ooze icon.png Foetid Ooze instead, if that happens the Tanning Fluid icon.png Tanning Fluid will not be consumed.
