About

"While the old folksy wisdom of the backwoods may not apply to Rumtifusels or Gumberoos, the saying nevertheless has a distinct essence truth to it. By mixing the mashed brain substance of an animal with water a tanning fluid can be created which is rich in natural tannings and which more often than not should suffice to transform the skin of that same animal into the finest leather for use in bookbindings, clothes or other purposes. Beware, though that the dried hides must first be scraped with Water of Lime to remove hair, fat and flesh before the tanning can commence. Tanning allows you to scrape hides in preparation for tanning, prepare tanning fluid and construct tanning tubs."

How to Tan Hides

  1. Place a raw hide on a Drying Frame. It'll become a Dried Hide after 8 hours.
  2. Use Lime on a Bucket of Water to make Milk of Lime
  3. Craft Limed Hide from the craft menu
  4. Use a Brain on a 10L Bucket of Water to make a bucket of 10L Tanning Fluid (concentration is 5%).
  5. Place up to four Limed Hides into the tub
  6. Pour the Tanning Fluid into tanning tub and wait.
  7. Every time a hide tans 100% it consumes 10L of Tanning Fluid and is converted into Leather*.

* - There is currently a possible bug in the game where if you place 4 limed hides before you add the liquid, then just one 10L bucket of tanning fluid is all that's required to turn all 4 hides into leather

Note:

  • Whilst on the Drying Frame or Tanning Tub a faint white dial appears over the hide icon to indicate its progress. Animal hide takes roughly 8 (real) hours to dry and to tan.
  • Solution concentration doesn't affect tanning time. High concentration raises resulting leather quality a little bit.
  • Plain water can be added to the tanning tub if it's not empty.
  • Adding plain water dilutes the solution requiring a brain to be added. If the solution falls under (5?)%, the hides will not tan.
  • A Brain can be added directly to the tub if the solution falls under this concentration to bring it back up. Maximum concentration is 10%.
  • Brains are only acquired with butchering a dead deer, beaver or March Hare, and only after Tanning is learned.
