Rather than being round as it's icon suggests, a  Clay Trough is long and rectangular.
How to Make Clay
- Fill a Vessel with
 Potable Water.
- Select a Lime and right-click it on your Vessel of Potable Water to make
 Milk of Lime.
- Select your Milk of Lime and right-click it on your Clay Trough. A Clay Trough can hold 10x
 Buckets (100 Liters) of Milk of Lime.
- With
 Any Shovel equipped,  Dig the ground to get  Dirt, which you will hold over your head. You can carry up to 15x clumps of Dirt.
- With the Dirt over your head right-click the Clay Trough to dump in the Dirt. This will produce 1x
 Clay for each clump of Dirt you drop in. Each clump of Dirt will consume .5 Liters of Milk of Lime, so a full Clay Trough can produce 200x Clay before needing to be re-filled.
