Salem's world is made up of many unique terrain types or biomes. Many of these are home to unique animal and item spawns, which are catalogued here. Note that universal spawns (such as Flint and Smooth Stones) will be omitted.

Grassland

AKA: plains, steppe

Grasslands range from wide, open plains to small patches within forests. They are characterized as being largely flat, with few trees, and vary in color from brown, to yellow, to pale green, to a rich green. At the time of writing, grasslands are the only terrain in which creatures spawn, making them essential to any budding settlement.

Creatures:
Common: Cricket, Deer
Uncommon: Bear, Beaver (must border water)
Unique items:
Foraged: Autumn Grass, Blackberry, Huckleberry, Honeysuckle Kudzu, Lavender Blewit, Sugar Cap
Inspirational: Devil's Wort

Forests

Two types of forest populate the world of Salem. These forests make for brilliant homes (or neighbors) as they are rich in mushrooms and inspirationals, yet often lack enough grassy patches to satisfy the determined hunter. This will likely change with time, as the developers create new animals or extend the territories of existing ones.

Autumnal

AKA: maple forest

Unique items:
Foraged: Blackberry, Maple Leaf, Virginia Snail, Waxing Toadstool, Wild Garlic, Witch's Hat
Inspirational: Chestnut, New World Gourd, Perfect Autumn Leaf, Singing Old Log

Coniferous

AKA: pine forest, lumberwoods, woods

Unique items:
Foraged: Blackberry, Lavender Blewit, Virginia Snail, Waxing Toadstool, Wild Garlic, Witch's Hat
Inspirational: Chestnut, Singing Old Log

Badlands

AKA: desert, steppe, dunes

Badlands tend to vary a lot in elevation, being very flat in one place and sporting sheer cliffs in another. They are much like grasslands, but completely lack creature spawns.

Unique items:
Foraged: Autumn Grass, Blackberry, Huckleberry, Honeysuckle Kudzu, Lavender Blewit, Sugar Cap
Inspirational: Devil's Wort

Lakes and Rivers

Much of Salem is streaked with rivers, lakes and pools of water. New characters will find they are a viable source of food via Fishing, but note that deeper water requires Swimming to cross. Also note that (currently) none of the water-based terrain types are dig-able, and that swamps are rather rare.

Water

AKA: lake, sea, ocean, river, stream

Unique items:
Foraged: Lilypad Bulb, Seaweed
Inspirational: Beautiful Seashell

Sand

AKA: beach, shore

Unique items:
Foraged: Coarse Salt, Seaweed
Inspirational: Aged Driftwood, Beautiful Seashell

Swamp

AKA: bog, wetland

Unique items:
Foraged: Lilypad Bulb, Seaweed, Waxing Toadstool

Quarries

Found in all biomes. Quarries can be gathered from by digging over them with a shovel and the skill Quarrying.

Stone

Stone quarries are abundant, found in varying sizes in any biome. Digging on one will yield one Stone Boulder.

Limestone

Lime quarries are much rarer than their stone counterpart, and often much smaller. Digging on one will yield one Lime Boulder.

Clay

Clay can be collected from clay pits, which share the same tile as dug dirt yet appear naturally.

Terrain Oddities

As well as the standard biomes, Salem is dotted with the occasional trail. These are brown, muddy-looking streaks resembling roadways, are of varying length and seem to be placed quite randomly. It is not known whether these are simply to spice up the landscape and act as landmarks or if they will have some other purpose in the future. Digging over one yields only dirt.
