Sometimes you catch the snowball. Sometimes the snowball catches you.
About
Snowballs are found rolling about the 
Snow biome. Click on the Snowball or it's icon on the minimap in order to chase after it. A Snowball will melt quickly in your inventory, although it will last a bit longer during a Coldsnap. Right-clicking a Snowball give you the option to eat it, eating a Snowball adds 3 to your Quaffed & Quenched debuff and reduces your Body Temperature.
Using the
