Can be built outside.
A bed is used to instantly log off by right clicking it and then chose the option to Sleep. There's a 20 second logout timer to leave Salem otherwise.
Sleeping in a bed will increase your rate of inspiration; the better the bed the more extra inspiration you get while logged off.
Sleeping in a bed will also lower your Insanity. Beds will not lower Madness Levels, only bring Insanity down to the lowest point of your current Madness Level.
