Move Requests

Software Upgrades

"Records" seem still to be broken in v1.7.1 due to another bug, see my report
I'll keep on coding with string types to bypass the lack of usability of type Record.
Hope these guys fix those issues in due time... :)

subpage on all namespaces

Hi, could you enable sub-page support on all namespaces?
This will provide an automatic navigation on pages that make use of sub pages.
To see an example of the navigation i mean look at the top of my sandbox page.
It looks like its going to be, is, used by some pages... Thanks a lot.

Take care :)

Hi,
Just wanted to let you know that i might be leaving soon™, as it seems Salem is exiting the test phase probably monday, see irc-log
As soon as a game goes commercial in anyway, it means the end of testing phase for me, and that means i will move on to other things as announced on my userpage.
I hope you find a suitable successor for my position, for the benefit of this community.
I have been tutoring Jord for a while now, on how certain things are setup and done with some background on why, so maybe you can consider him to be part of your team.
This recommendation is purely based on my efforts put in tutoring him as stated above, i can not vouch for his personal integrity or overall knowledge in anyway as i have no clue regarding that.
I will most likely stick around until Salem makes the actual switch to commercial implementations...
I hope i have been helpful to this community with the things i've done, and hope the next one will continue in my spirit and finish my to-do's ;)
So take care for when they do go commercial :)

Config changes

This section is for requests concerning config changes:

  • Editing pages with large data
I don't know if you have changed something recently on your server but im getting an error message when im trying to edit some pages that have much data in them.
    See this page
This currently has disabled me to edit {{Infobox}}, because when i try to edit, it will cut-off the content thus vandalizing the complete code.
Hope you look into this issue soon and fix it.

CopyRights

I just noticed you changed the wiki's copyrights (diff), and then decommissioned me as your sysop, which prevents me to correct your mistake.
I hereby officially demand you to add to it that my work was, still is, and will stay released under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 License.
If you don't want to comply with that request, you should immediately and permanently remove all my contributions to the wiki, while safeguarding that others won't re-create copies of my work, i have backups of the wiki as proof.
This is my first and last request on this matter to you.
I hope i was helpful to the wiki while being part of your team.

Changes

Is it okay if I start replacing TriMoons crazy code? I want to separate the infoboxes out a bit, ie creatures get their own one tailored to creatures, skills box for skills etc. I am coding things on my local wiki and when have an infobox type perfected I will move it over. If that's okay. I ask because I don't want to remove TriMoons infboxes if people are happy with them. Bluestone 16:46, 10 August 2012 (CDT)

Response to Trimoon

I realize things like this tend to blow over, but the heavy rhetoric Trimoon is (improperly) using is starting to get me to worry that their constant instigating and saber-rattling might actually bully Salemwiki into appeasing them in the hopes of a simple resolution to cease the issue. Based on that assumption, I'm throwing in some information here. (i know, tl,dr, but this stuff is important is intended for discussion, if it must be moved i understand but parsing is of concern)

1) I'm a former software engineer that now specializes exclusively in litigation and copyrights. I've worked cases involving RightHaven, MonsterCable, Kodak, RIM, Microsoft, and Apple. I'm not offering any formal consultation nor should my opinions here be taken or interpreted as anything but a few pieces of information. If you have any concerns, I strongly urge everyone to review these facts on their own for caveats.

2) The claims Trimoon is making employ a very real and very legal license, however the license fails to cover any of the claims s/he is making. You cannot simply throw a copyright symbol on anything you do on the web and claim it as your own. You must claim your own work as distinct and a product of you and you alone.

3) Salem the game is already owned and copyrighted, and unless Trimoon presents clear and formal documents proving ownership of Salem Trimoon can make no claim to any of the game, its content, or its data contained within. Claiming over wise is; by definition, stealing.

4) The Salemwiki is a public database intended to disseminate information (i.e. news). As it is a public contribution site it is subject to rights management as dictated by the site. News and citing of information from Salem CANNOT be copyrighted, but personal works can.

5) Trimooon can make no claim of ownership to any of the contents within the charts, tables, or functions Trimoon created as per 3. In addition Trimoon can make no ownership claims to pieces of hers/his that describe the events within the game Salem as per 4. Trimoon can claim the copyright to cover her works of art or creations (in this case, images, any short stories or personal commentary, and any copyrightable functions s/he created). The image Trimoon used as their mark is ownable. If trimoon wrote any short stories or personal commentaries then those are property as well. However charts and tables are not copyrightable. Software can be owned, but it must be suitably complex to create a personal work that creates a unique environment with multiple layers. Operating systems and database management programs can be copyrighted, simple tables cannot be. The software language used was designed specifically to organize and present information, functions cannot be owned, programs can. None of the work I have seen so far gets even remotely close, you need thousands of lines of code and thorough annotation to create something ownable. Claiming the right to a call table function is no more insane than calling microsoft to tell them you claimed a specific line chart in excel as your own and for them to cease and desist.

6) The burden is on the accuser (Trimoon) to prove that his/her works are complex enough to justify ownership, NOT the other way around with the common license agreement.

Advice to Salemwiki users:

Whenever accused of copyright; especially for non-media, as the defendant you have a ton of rights that many don't know about. The accuser must formally and clearly present all information regarding their claims, and their proof. This is not a thread post, this is a a stack of documents (small ones are hundreds of pages, paper or digital). After being presented this information, the defendant has WEEKS to prepare and evaluate their position and provide a response for these matters. Any documents not notarized can be refused until marked. The defendant is under no obligation to comply with any of their demands until ordered to by a person with the authority to do so.

I personally suggest you remove Trimoon's image, as that is a clearly ownable image, however I would not remove his/her name as this could cause a conflict where something owned was already properly attributed. I haven't seen any short stories, narratives, or fiction, but if those exist I would remove those too. Everything else I have seen can stay. Trimoon cannot claim ownership to pages, game content, or tables/charts. If trimoon created a custom search function that built your character, gave recommendations for gear, and pointed you to useful pages then their MIGHT be grounds. I am not aware of anything near this.

Advice to Trimoon:

It's clear you are focusing yourself heavily on game testing and wiki's, and that you are building a name for yourself by the sites you link. However you seem to be blurring the line between contributing and advertising. Intentionally claiming a large portion of any open project, adamantly refusing any change against yours, and then insisting on a complete removal of all your work is worse than sloppy, its disgraceful. Your practices are shameful and misleading and go against those trying to build any public database. If ownership is such a big deal for you I strongly suggest you look into another field, Is this really the type of image you want to be associated with Trimoon.

Advice to all:

Patent Trolls, Copyright threats, and similar confrontational entities are a simple product of our era and aren't going anywhere. Please take a few minutes to browse on your basic rights whenever confronted with these situations, in most cases a simple google search will lead you too several options you never knew you had. I do not mean to imply Salemwiki is not aware of these, simply a service reminder, blah blah blah, go wikis.
