The best way to avoid being poisoned is to avoid the snake altogether: stay outside its agression range or run to shallow water or behind a closed fence. If hunting snakes, it is best to kill it in one hit (Bullrun seems to work well with 18 [[Yellow Bile]] or more): wait until it stops moving before attacking it; however, once poisoned, you can fight it like any other low level creature. If you don't have the requisite Yellow Bile for Bullrun, you can load up on stones, shoot one with your slingshot, then run across a shallow stream and pluck away at it.  At 9 Yellow Bile, it takes eleven shots to kill one, including the initial one to draw aggression.

About

The Timber Rattler is an aggressive creature that applies the Poisoned effect when it attacks. It may rarely drop an Etterfang when butchered, which can be crafted into a Rattler Serum that is used to cure this poison effect.

Timber Rattler's are the most dominant creature in the Badlands and Crag biomes so be particularly observant in these areas. Timber Rattlers also sometimes spawn when lifting old tree logs and might also spawn when lifting up rocks.

They aren't able to enter shallow water, and their corpse will sink if dropped into the water.

Hunting Tips

If hunting snakes, it is best to kill it in one hit. Though a low humor player can still hunt Timber Rattlers safely using a Slingshot: load up on stones, shoot one with your slingshot to aggro the snake, then run across a shallow stream and pluck away at it. Alternatively take advantage of the AI's pathfinding issue with cliffs and attack any snake from a different level wherever the path up or down between the levels remains outside view. This is however extremely slow; at 9 YB it takes eleven shots to kill a snake, including the initial stone to draw aggression.

The fastest and most ideal method of dispatching a Timber Rattler is by using Bullrun that is unlocked with Fast Moves. Take note that the Slingshot will still remain useful for drawing aggression safely. Once the snake is aggro it will slither straight towards it target, allowing for an easy aim with Bullrun, stunning it on impact if it doesn't kill it outright.

Take note that once poisoned, you can fight Timber Rattlers like any other low level creature without any additional caution. However, there's currently a bug that may lock your regeneration even outside combat after having initiated combat under the influence of poison. This lock will persist even if you cure yourself of the poison, but can be fixed with a character relog.
