To make a fence, build a start/corner post, then right-click on the post to build in a cardinal direction.
To build a gate, leave a 2 square gap between two start/corner posts and right-click on a post to enable the gate option.

Tips:

  • To place a corner post it seems to be necessary that the surrounding tiles are also flat, not only the tile on which you want to start the corner post. You should at least test it before planning a whole wall.
