In Salem there is no integrated transaction system for goods exchange between players. The usual method for trading is to putting you stuff on the barrels in Boston. However this method is not safe and it is supposed to be so. So the only safe way not to get scummed, is to trade with trustful persons or in small amounts.
The other danger comes from the possibility, that some third actor runes to the barrel while transaction and just pick some thing from it and run away. To dismiss this possibility the two traders can position themselves in the way, how it is described on the picture.
