Equipping an Axe allow you to Chop down Trees to get {{i|Log}}s. The better the Axe the faster it chops. In a pinch an axe can be used to Chip {{i|Stone}} or Ore from a {{i|Boulder}}s, but it's better to use a {{i|Any Pickaxe}} if one is available.
