Seasons
The are three different Seasons in the New World, two natural and one supernatural. Natural Seasons switch roughly week to week and have different effects on the animal and plants around you. Pilgrims with access to the Alchemy skill can build a Thermoscope to check the exact Temperature.
Season | Type |
Everbloom | Natural |
Coldsnap | Natural |
Blood Moon | Supernatural |
Hypothermia
A pilgrim’s Body Temperature generally sits a healthy 100 degrees (His Majesty’s Scale). Hypothermia begins to set in as soon as your Body Temperature reaches 97, and, if left unchecked, will result in you being completely Frozen.
At first Hypothermia will not impact you very much, but as your body Temperature drops more, the stronger the Hypothermia will become. The stronger the Hypothermia the more your movement will be slowed. If your Body Temperature drops to 93 you will no longer be able to regenerate Humours. If your Body Temperature reaches 85 you will stop periodically as you shiver and shake, caused you to be momentarily Stunned. Finally, if your Body Temperature hits to 70 degrees you will become Frozen.
How to Avoid Hypothermia
1. Dress Warm
Each item of has a Thermal Value. This number refers to how warm that item is. This number can be seen in in the lower right-hand of the item. Pilgrims come to the New World with only Priestly Robes which has a Thermal Value of 10. This is more than enough to stay warm during an Everbloom, but will not be warm enough for a Coldsnap. You will need to find more Clothing, and quickly.
To do this learn the skill Patchwork & Rags as soon as possible. Some good Inspirationals to use are: Abandoned Cobweb, Broken Bough, Cactus Cat, Flame Azalea, Grass Whistle, Iris Prismatica, Shooting Star, Spring Beauty, Smooth Stone, and Wild Garlic.
Once Patchwork & Rags is learned check all the Hollow Logs and Hollow Stumps near your Leanto making sure to keep all the Abandoned Cobwebs and Dried Timber Rattler Skins you find. Use the list below to help you craft some warm clothes. Keep in mind one of the most important clothes to make will be a good pair of Shoes. Rags can be obtained from crafting extra pairs of Clothes.
- Good Starter Clothes
- Brown Pants ---> Dried Timber Rattler Skin x 1 : Thermal Value = 4
- Frontiersman's Duster ---> Dried Timber Rattler Skin x 2 + Rags x 3 + Abandoned Cobweb x 5 : Thermal Value = 18
- Haybales ---> Hay x 3 + Abandoned Cobweb x 3 : Thermal Value = 2
- Hide Cape ---> Dried Timber Rattler Skin x 1 : Thermal Value = 14
- Jute Cap ---> Abandoned Cobweb x 4 : Thermal Value = 6
- Jute Pants ---> Abandoned Cobweb x 6 : Thermal Value = 4
- Jute Shirt ---> Abandoned Cobweb x 5 : Thermal Value = 4
- Puritan's Hat ---> Rags x 2 + Abandoned Cobweb x 1 : Thermal Value = 7
Once you have on a good set of clothes your body Temperature will slowly start to go up. This generally means having an item of Clothing equipped to each Clothing slot.
2. Drink Some Broth
Drinking Fish Broth, Meat Broth, Poultry Broth will raise your Body Temperature. Place a Any Fish, Any Raw Meat Cut, or Plucked Wild Turkey into a Clay Pot on a lit Fireplace. Right-click the Clay Pot with your Broth onto a Drinking Vessel, such as a Barkcup, and equip it to your left hand slot. Right-click your equipped Barkcup and select "Sip". Each Sip will raise your Body Temperature by 3 to 4 degrees.
3. Warm Up Inside a Building
The Temperature inside any Building is always a warm 80, meaning if you are suffering from Hypothermia you can enter any Building to slowly raise your Body Temperature. While you can warm up in Buildings you’ve built, the easiest solution is to travel ... to Providence and enter one on the open Buildings.
4. Using a Wool Blanket
Right-clicking a Wool Blanket and selecting "Cuddle-Up" will instantly raise your Body Temperature.
5. Carry a Heated Stone
Any Stone can be baked in a Fireplace to make Heated Stone. Carrying a Heated Stone in your inventory will raise your Body Temperature.
Using Fire to Raise Body Temperature
Fire, when used properly, can raise your Body Temperature and contract the effects of Hypothermia. Holding or standing near specific sources of Fire will, once every 30 seconds, increase your Body Temperature.
Fire Source | Action |
Fireplace | Stand Near |
Flaming Pinecone | Hold |
Pile of Wood | Stand Near |
Torch | Hold |
Being Frozen
There is only two ways of becoming unfrozen.
- Have another pilgrim defrost you by right-clicking you with a Source of Fire such as a Tinder Drill or a lit Torch.
- Wait until the next Everbloom. Once the Season switches to Everbloom you will be thawed and your Body Temperature reset to 100. However, you will still gain Madness over this time so unless you feel confident the Season will change soon, this is probably not an effective solution.
Snow Exploration
Snow is only found at the top of very tall Mountains. Venturing up into the Snow will dramatically increase the speed in which your Body Temperature drops. The Temperature may be much colder than even a Coldsnap in the Snow. A pilgrim's regular set of clothing will probably not protect them up during Snow exploration. Make sure to never walk on the Snow without Shoes and make sure to have some alternative methods of raising your Body Temperature available to you. Alternatively you can craft an Igloo, entering which will warm you up.
