About

This page contains some basic information about crime and criminal acts, which should be useful to both new players who want to stay out of trouble, and players thinking of trying PvP.

Crime, Scents and Evidence

(See Scent for more information.)

There are various kind of crimes you can commit against other players, some are Summonable, others are not, but all crimes will leave a Scent

Summonable crimes leave Evidence Which can be collected at the place the crime was committed and used to put the criminal at the stocks, or use them at the criminal's leanto to deliver Revenge. Not summonable crimes don't leave evidence and aren't worth tracking most of the time.

You can't commit crimes against a claim or town unless you have Crimes turned on. This can be done with a toggle in the Adventure menu.

Assault is the crime of attacking another player, which you can do anywhere in the world except inside the Providence claim itself. (Or The server's main town, if you are playing on an Expedition) however, attacking and koing another player is not a summonable crime, so you can do it freely, people can still track your homestead but they won't be able to summon you online.

Even on the Providence claim you can still Larceny if someone has been KOed.

The different types of crimes are defined on the Scent page.

There is a big difference between 'Scents' and 'Evidence' though many people call pieces of Evidence 'scents'. Scents are little pink exclamation points floating above the ground at the scene of a crime which can be seen by anyone who toggles 'Tracking'. Evidence is the item placed in your inventory when you pick up a scent off the ground.

To see a Scent, turn on Tracking in the Adventure menu. A Scent is left anywhere someone commits any crime. Gathering these scents by Right Clicking on them and choosing to Collect will pick up a piece of Evidence and add a 180 minute tracking timer. (You can also close the tracking window and collect the same scent to charge up the timer again or charge up the timer by 180 more minutes for every crime.) Once the timer is charged, you can follow it and attempt to find the culprit. Scents disappear from the world within days, depending on the crime committed.

The Evidence picked up into inventory can be stored for as long as the scent lasts, and used to get revenge. If you can find the homestead of a criminal and access it, you can use a piece of Evidence to summon their character online and kill it, which will leave scents. Alternatively, you can destroy their homestead and summon them at your Leanto, Summoning someone who doesn't have a homestead results in their instant death (Will still leave Revenge Scent at your leanto). This works for any Summonable Evidence, Trespassing and Assault are not summonable for example, so you can commit those crimes without harsh consequences.

Tips and tricks on Defending your Lands

See the pages on Stake Claim, Town Bell, Blazing Braziers, Torchposts, Makeshift Fences, Split-rail Fences, Stone Hedges, Plank Fences, Brick Walls, and Locksmithing for details about the various defenses and how they work.

There are many tips and tricks regarding how to not let someone destroy your base; some of them include:

  • Build a wall, build a Brazier. It's shocking how many people don't do one or both of these things and lose everything because of it.
  • Always Lock your gates and always Close them immediately after walking through them. Don't wait until you log off to go through and close them all; you'll surely forget. Don't like the hassle? Buy Springs.
  • Don't give claim permissions to White listed players. The default color when memorizing or kinning someone is White, so if you give permissions to that color, you will give permissions to every random person you have on your Buddy List.
  • A stolen item will carry a scent for three days and can be tracked for that time and used to find your base. Be aware of that when buying from unknown traders. Of course, keeping your base hidden isn't really a valid defense strategy, you'll always be found eventually no matter how hard you try.
  • Don't hoard. The nicer your base looks from the outside, the more likely it is that someone will decide it's worth the effort to break in. Make and farm what you need, and if you find yourself with row and rows of chests and sheds of items you probably won't need for months, throw some stuff away or find someone who might want to buy it.
  • Authority objects under Trial By Fire are destroyable regardless of there being silver in the bell. Don't be a fool - Wrap your Authority Objects with walls. See Boundry Stone

Raiding and Self Defense

WARNING: If you don't have the support of a group to help you raid and a good place to keep your raider out of harm's way, you are just asking to be killed off. If you commit summonable crimes with your main character expect it to die in a few days

  • Carry a Tiny Pocketwatch in a Pocket everywhere you go. If someone attacks you, you can use it to run away very quickly. There's even a chance that you can outrun them and drop combat.
  • Defend yourself if someone attacks you. If you get attacked, and you want to take your chances with combat rather than trying to run away, you can both fight and KO them without leaving scents. It is not a crime to defend yourself. However, if you choose to loot them or murder them, that is considered a crime.
  • Create alternate characters (alts) for raiding
  • Never commit summonable crimes with your main, don't even learn the skills if possible.
  • Protect your base, sorround it at least with a plank fence, include braziers and torchpost covering all claimed terrain.
  • It's important that you use a crime set of clothes, Buy or craft some 0 difficulty clothes and equip them with Artifact that buff criminality, this will greatly reduce the black bile drain of all crime acts.
  • The easiest way to raise crime alts is the use of Fruits for gluttony and a good feasting set, but those are extremely late game items, i recommend 'shroom salads or whatever low food you can craft with ease.

If you commit a crime against another citizen; attacking, KOing or Murdering, you will not receive a Crime Debuff.

If you commit a crime against property; trespassing, peeking into containers, stealing, or vandalism, you will receive a Crime Debuff. if you trespass, break in to, and steal from one claim, you will receive one crime debuff stack, and each crime will go into that stack.

When stacking up crimes on a claim, you will receive Black Bile penalties for each crime you commit. The larger the number of crimes you have stacked up, the larger each penalty will be (More crimes on a claim = More bb drained for the next crime). Other crime stacks do not count towards the penalty, only the stack that applies to the claim you are on. Additionally, you will be drained slowly of Black Bile just for standing on a claim that you are trespassing on.

You need to step away from the claim in order to reduce your crime debuff back to 0, you also won't be able to regenerate biles while you have a crime debuff. Attacking as long as you have biles and walking a distance away to regenerate biles.

  • Braziers and Torchposts will shoot at you if you are in range of them and you commit any crime on a anyclaim (Brazier/Torchpost doesn't need to be on the claim you commit the crime to start shooting) Each shoot has the chance of being a critical hit for a big ammount of your total Black Bile (this is true no matter what your Black Bile is). This means that the more defenses you have the better, even if they hit for a small amount, you are aiming for spam of critical hits.

Tips and tricks on PVP Fights

Every player has their own playstyle when it comes to pvp, however some attacks are stronger than others, watch videos on youtube about dock club fights

People use Wing-A-Rang for stunning, Leg Sweep for a debuff that makes the enemy walk slower, Firearms for a damage based on the opponent's blood, Stomp for stun, Swords and Halberds, or the all time combo of 2 Punch and 1 Uppercut

In Boston, there is an arena called Dock Club, which is a relatively safe place to combat other players. Scents for Battery and Assault don't drop, Larceny is still possible so there is risk of losing your clothing or weapons, but Murder is not allowed in Dock Club.

Mortars and Cannons

Cannons are only available on Expedition Servers, they can destroy an entire base with one cannonball. Mortars are used to destroy Trial by Fire and Trial by Combat Mostly, but can be used to destroy people's fruit trees from a distance.

The effect of the Mortar is dependent on what ammo you loaded it with AND what it actually lands on. Here are some highlights.

  • Anvils & Various metal objects Vs. Players cause the highest damage and highest amount of head trauma for new concussion effect.
  • Herbpots vs. Players are also surprisingly effective.
  • Whittler Benches & other wooden objects Vs. Players does very little damage.
  • Metal Objects Vs. Trees is an easy way to deforest an area
  • Any Object Vs. Trial By Fire & Trial By Combat: Does Damage to it.

Thus players can donut, and wall around their TbF and TbC's still. However, if a player can 'see' where that is then they can simply build a long-range artillery mortar and blow it to pieces (assuming the person who built it is not waiting for you to try and rushes and kills both you and your morter).

Cannons can be built and pulled around like a little sled.

  • Cannon Balls weigh 55kg.
  • Loading a cannon takes a small amount of time. Once a cannon is loaded, one cannot pull it anymore.
  • You may light the fuse of a cannon with any spark. The cannon will fire in 7.5 Hours and obliterate all walls in its path.
  • For every 100 Cloak and Dagger on the player firing the cannon and leaving the waste crime up to 1 hour 'could' come off the fire time. This is akin to all the +%rolls in Salem. This means at 750 Cloak and Dagger a cannon could theoretically fire in 1 minute.
  • Standing in front of a cannon ball when it fires will permakill you.
  • One does not need a waste claim to have a cannon do damage to the stuff in front of it, HOWEVER, it is a waste crime to light the cannon in the first place so it would need to be off town claim to light. Cannons can fire LONGER than their render distance.

Trial By Combat and Trial By Fire

You have to build a Trial by Combat if you want to kill a criminal you have previously tracked, this way you don't have to penetrate a highly fortified base if you want to bring justice.

You have to build a Trial by Fire If you want to raid on a Town Bell claimed area.

Visit their respective pages for more information, they are pretty much self-explanatory.

Inherit and Dying

Before you happen to lose your character, make sure you "save" your progress by writing your will, visit the Graveyard, there will be an npc there that will save your character's biles and proficiencies for a small amount of silver, so you can inherit your saved progress in your next life.

If you happen to find your skeleton, you can bury it and put flowers every day to regain some proficiencies. See Burial_Rights

Mr. Puggles

Mr. Puggles is the town Executioner and he will reward you if you bring him the Scalp of a murderer or a very valuable scalp, he can also kill you if you pay him 150 silver.

Mr. Puggles loves visitors. You should go visit his page.
