Bodies of Water
Bodies of Water are any Water tile physically found out in the New World. If you are looking for info about Water used in crafting, Boiling, or Gardening, see Potable Water. Bodies of Water cannot normally be built on, however a Mysterious Lillypad can be placed on any Body of Water to allow Structures to be placed on top of it.
Forageables
Creatures
Depth
Two Water Depths exist in the New World - The Shallows and The Deep, and while tiles exist of just one Depth or the other, the two are most often inter-mixed. Pilgrims can Fish in either The Shallows or The Deep.
The Shallows
The Shallows are denoted by a light blue color on both the mini map and in the world. The Shallows can be crossed by foot or by Steed, but Vehicles will cause them to instantly stop.
The Deep
The Deep is denoted by a dark blue color on both the mini map and in the world. There are no Forageables found in The Deep, but a Shellfish Trap can be placed in The Deep to catch Shellfish. The Deep cannot be crossed by foot and can only be crossed by using Swim or Watercraft.
Watercraft
Watercraft are Transport Vehicles which can travel over Water. Objects can be loaded into a Watercraft by Lifting it and right-clicking the Watercraft, and unload by right-clicking any of the sacks in the Watercraft. Watercraft themselves cannot be Lifted when cargo is loaded inside of them.
Craft | Cargo Room | Passengers | Speed | Notes |
Canoe | 1 | 1 | Fast | Backpack Transport |
Rowboat | 4 | 3 | Slow | |
Raft | 8 | 5 | Moderate |
Swimming
Swim can be toggled on or off to allow for the crossing of The Deep tiles of Water. Swim drains Phlegm based on your Skill at Swimming. Running out of Phlegm while Swimming will cause you to become Knocked Out. Most Creatures cannot Swim so combat can be disengaged from in a pinch by Swimming into The Deep. Notably, both Wishpooshes can Swim and Furfurs can fly over Water.
Skill | Phlegm Drain |
Swimming | Great |
Long Distance Swimming | Minor |
Salinity
The Salinity of a Body of Water determines what type of Fish and Shellfish can be caught there. Fish
Shellfish Trap Finds
Salt Water
The Ocean is the only Salt Water in the New World. While it is possible to explore by Watercraft it forms the New World's Easternmost boundary. It is the large Body of Water due East of Providence. This it the only place Sperm Whales are found. The Ocean can NOT be used to get Potable Water.
Freshwater
Freshwater is all other non Salt Water tiles of Water in the New World. Freshwater tiles can be classified as Lakes, Ponds, and Rivers, although these are no actual difference between these in terms of Foragables or Creatures.
Body of Freshwater | Main Difference | On Salem Dev Map? |
Pond | Large Body of Water. | No |
Lake | Very Large, at least 1 tile of The Deep. | Yes |
River | Long, but generally not very wide. | No |
Related Terrain Types
Many Lakes and Ponds will have Beaches. Rivers often culminate in a Swamp. Swamps are often filled small pools of Standing Water which can NOT be used for Potable Water but CAN be walked over and Vehicles can be Pulled over.
